Greetings DEvas!
I’m Angelica, and will be sharing the English newsletter editor’s position with the wonderful Ailsa whom you already know. If you have any feedback, please feel free to contact me anytime. I’d be happy to hear from you!
Did You Know?
The Google 10^100 project is back! As you may have heard, Google has decided to spend $10 million USD on five ideas that “will change the world”. More than 150,000 ideas were submitted in 25 languages during fall of last year.
Finally, the list of 16 finalists has been announced, and you can vote for your favorite until October 8. Projects range from Innovation in Public Transport to Real-time Health Monitoring, to Education for African Students.
One idea, “Encouraging positive media depictions of engineers and scientists”, seems relevant for promoting women in technology; I think the “geeky” or “anti-social” stereotype especially discourages women from entering the field. What do you think?
Once the 5 best ideas are chosen, Google will seek partners to implement the projects. If you think your company is up to the challenge (say, for example, a Japanese robotics company that can disable land mines), please apply!
You can read about the other ideas and vote here:

MEMBERSHIP TEAM NEWS
Misao Kajiro, Membership Coordinator

Total membership was 351 as of the 28th of September. Meeting with new people face to face is always effective even if communication over the internet is highly regarded these days. Three Tokyo-based DEJ volunteers met a new member, Angelica, when she visited from Kyoto. They had a good time together. Angelica agreed to lead a DEJ big event in 2011, which will be planned by the DEJ Steering Committee for the 10th anniversary. The details will be announced separately and we will be looking for many volunteers for this big event.
13th Art Festival in Kamakura, Gokurakuji and Inamuragasaki
There is an Art Festival in Kamakura between the 3rd and 12th of October.
Site: http://www.artfestival.jp/index4f.html (only in Japanese).
You can join many workshops such as Lenten fare, analog photography, picture letter, aroma, dress-remaking, tea ceremony, blown glass, and yoga. Indian music, Cello Jazz and dance will be held each day. I am thinking of attending ”Slow food in Italy” at my friend’s home.
WEB TEAM NEWS
Cathy Cox, Web Content Coordinator
web@…
Web Team members Angelica and Clare have been making great progress towards building our new-and-improved website. As you all know, we lost our old website due to a major server failure with our previous host this past spring, and we’ve been using a very simple place-holder page ever since. Our goal is to launch the new website by February 2010, and we’d like your help! If you have any DEJ related photos, graphics, or just suggestions regarding what you’d like to see on the new site, please send them our way!!
