Hello DEvas!

First, I’d like to welcome a new member, Angelica Lim, to the English side of this newsletter team. She has already helped out with proofreading this issue!

Summer vacation is over and the trains are getting crowded again. I hope you enjoyed a break, and if (like me) you couldn’t take one, I hope you enjoyed the weekends! In Tokyo this summer was a little less hot (I can hardly say “cooler”) than usual, although the rainy season seemed to
drag on into August. It seems that northern Japan is officially going from the rainy season straight into autumn! http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20090811b1.html

Many people in Japan thought that, like the rainy season, the LDP had outlasted its welcome. In the 10 years I’ve been here this country has been through more changes (and I don’t just mean Prime Ministers or Harajuku fashions) than I could have imagined possible anywhere. It seems that this was the moment it was all leading to, and the Japanese
people were finally ready to take a step into the unknown and get rid of a government that (among other things) had not been able to keep up with the changes the “ordinary” people have been through.

Although I couldn’t vote, I am naturally curious to see what’s going to happen next!
