It's autumn, when my thoughts turn to hikes among the fall colours,
arranging a plane ticket to visit my family for the holidays, and the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Like many other non-Japanese
residents, I'm beginning to dig deeper and deeper into my pile of
textbooks and soon you won't be able to find me at all until the
infamous first Sunday in December has passed.
It's hard for me to imagine what it must have been like to study
Japanese before the invention of the electronic dictionary with Kanji
lookup and "jump" function. I would be lost without mine. But
sometimes, for example when I just want to read a book on the train
as I go out for the evening, I don't want to be carrying such a heavy
thing in my purse. However, there are downloadable dictionaries for
mobile phones and I'm giving some serious thought to that.
On the other hand, some phones come with this function already
conveniently installed. I've seen a model that includes not only a J-
E / E-J dictionary, but also a multilingual travel phrasebook. You
can find out how to say "Where is the toilet?" in Chinese or Korean.
Or rather, since there is no pronunciation guide, you can call it up
on the screen and show it to a local person. The 21st century
equivalent of pointing at a guidebook, I suppose. But what happens if
you can't recharge the battery and you need a toilet?

October: it's a good season to learn new things. It's never
too late to learn, so please join our two workshops this
month. We all have different questions according to level of
skills, but sometimes there is no chance to ask what we
should do. At a DEJ workshop you can ask whatever you want
to know about.
I attended a wedding party recently and my dress was so
tight! My daughter presented me with a DVD, "PERFECTLY FIT"
by Claudia Schiffer. Some of you may know what this means.
I'm a long way from having a perfect body (!).

MEDIA TEAM NEWS

Typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones have swept the surface of
the earth. I hope you have been all safe. There are only
three more months to go before the year's end, and we are
planning to have a few more events to wrap up the year. I am
announcing the following to you now so we can be
well-prepared:
1) First, we are having an Excel & PowerPoint workshop on
Saturday October 22nd. This is described in detail in
another section of this newsletter. Those of you who have
used Excel and PowerPoint but are not familiar with many
interesting features, please come join us!
2) December is the party month of course! For now, we are
tentatively planning to have a holiday party on Saturday,
December 3rd. This year, we are thinking about holding a
talent show in which any one of you with something to
perform in front of us is welcome. You can play music, sing,
dance, perform a comedy or impersonation, do magic tricks,
or anything you can show us. Prizes will be awarded to
excellent talent. Performers, please contact me! I will
start organizing the party pretty soon. Besides the talent
show, we are also thinking about inviting a few musicians
for entertainment. If you have suggestions, please let us
know!
3) For your information, the Tokyo metropolitan government
just launched a convenient portal site for non-Japanese
people. The person in charge directly contacted DEJ about it
because we have a lot of non-Japanese members. This site
allows you to find all kinds of information useful in your
daily lives and business activities in English. The URL is
as follows. Please check it out:
http://www.tokyo-business.jp/
Message from the government office:
"Tokyo Business Entry Point was launched on August 31st by
Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Which is One-stop portal
service for foreign-affiliated firm's various questions and
We provide a multitude of Information through our network of
organizations."
