FROM THE EDITOR

Interesting free tool time! If you have a web site and want
to know what keywords are popular to optimize your pages
for, or if you do PR/market research, or if you're just
nosy, here's a great tool to play with: Overture's keyword
advice tool.

Search for a word or phrase using this tool and you'll get
information on how many searches were performed for that
and other related words on Yahoo! in the last month. Many
of you probably already know that Yahoo! Japan is by far
the most popular search engine in Japan, with a 64.5% reach
of the search market (data from NetRatings 2006). Although
Yahoo! is not as popular in the U.S. the results are still
interesting and meaningful (there is no equivalent free
tool for Google). For example in August, "halloween" had
already been searched for a whopping 227,083 times using
yahoo.com (including 1,997 searches for "halloween contact
lens"), and 39,037 times in Japanese using yahoo.co.jp.

Do be warned, it can get addictive, and you might be a
little surprised at some of the things people search for!

ROTA LEADER

Leader's Report

Hello DEvas,

This is Smita, Rota leader of DEJ for October and November.
I am glad to tell you that in the coming 2 months DEJ is
offering many events and activities like a 'Meet the DEvas'
event for new members, a home page design workshop from
Tara (web designer from New Zealand) etc. Also, Anastasia
Govan (Director of the Australian Computer Society) is
coming to Tokyo in November and is ready to guide young IT
professionals. So if our members are interested, we can
arrange a meeting with her and benefit from her experience in the
IT field. Another good thing to share with all of you is
that many new members are joining with us and are ready to
give their active support for the association.

During my Rota leadership, I wish to make DEJ more and more
active, But of course all of your active and moral support
is very much required.

Thanking You,

Smita Deshpande
Rota Leader (Oct and Nov)

MEMBERSHIP TEAM NEWS

Misao Kajiro, Membership Coordinator.
<membership@digitalevejapan.org>

Total membership is 703 as of September 30th, 2006.

Three new members joined in September.
Tara, Victoria, and Shobha, welcome to DEJ!

They will be introduced in a future newsletter but let me
do a brief introduction. One of them is an Associate
Professor at the School of International Liberal Studies
at the University of Tokyo. One is a New Zealand designer
specializing in web design and has worked in the USA. The
other new member works with an investment bank in Tokyo
(technology department) and has been working in the software
industry, especially application development and
maintenance.

Some new members kindly offered to volunteer. Shobha joined
the Tech team and Tara will give a Homepage workshop in
November. The details are coming soon. Thanks to them for
all their help and support. We will be holding a Meet the
DEvas social event soon, and the details will be announced
on the main list soon.

Personally I'll be visiting Concord in New Hampshire and
Boston for two weeks. Is there anyone from there?

WEB CONTENT TEAM NEWS

October comes so fast. It makes the month of September seem
so short. Anyway, there are a lot of interesting upcoming
events and workshops soon to be posted on our DEJ mailing
group. One more event to add to your list is the celebration
of this year's 50th anniversary of Japan's membership in the
United Nations. UN Day will be held on October 25, 2006.

INSTRUCTOR WANTED!

Looking for a patient office software skills instructor
(will pay).

My name is Jennifer and I am looking for someone to train
and support me while I try to catch up with today's minimum
office computing skills requirements.

I have never needed to use Excel or Word at work, and when I
have, the tasks were so simple that I got away with not
knowing how to use the software efficiently and
intelligently. I'm an email checking, two finger typing kind
of person. However, I do not intend to remain in 1995.

I am looking for a teacher who speaks either English or
French, preferably in Yokohama but Tokyo would be fine also,
and who has extensive knowledge and experience of Excel and
Word. I would like to start from December, meeting once a
week, for a period of one month to start with so that we can
both see where it goes.

If you want to and can help me (HELP ME!), then please email
jen.slow.typer@gmail.com with an hourly rate that you consider
reasonable and an outline of who you are and what you can do
for me.
