NOTES FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE

ROTA LEADER for June and July
Leader's Report
Well, this is my first Rota Leader's report and I am very happy
to have this opportunity. As you may have read, I am from
New Zealand and have been living in Japan for almost eight years.
I am involved with Storage-based technology, so if you would
like to discuss the latest in Data storage, please chat to me.
I hope everyone is enjoying the fine Spring weather and
some very warm (if not hot?!) days. The rainy season will soon
be upon us and we will find ourselves not surviving in Tokyo
without the air conditioning or a fan to take away the humidity feeling.
I visited the new Midtown area in Roppongi the other day as well as
attending the new art gallery. I was quite impressed with the layout
and the structure of both buildings. If you have time, please check them out.
Midtown is quite unique, and there are a lot of spots to just sit
and watch the people passing by, without having to pay for a coffee.
A big thank you to Chiharu and Misa for organising a successful seminar
on video production. Tony was most enthusiastic and very inspiring speaker.
I think everyone really enjoyed the opportunity to listen to someone that was
so passionate about what they do. It's amazing what can be done with
the imagination and with digital technoloy. Music videos will never be
the same now, or TV commercials, after learning some of the tricks
of the trade.
Thanks.

Total membership is 701 as of May 30th, 2007.
Two new members joined in May. Donna and Fadoua,
welcome to DigitalEve Japan!
Our Speaker Event by DEJ member, Tim Ralston,
was a wonderful success. One of the attendees said:
"Nice to find that kind of passion in someone.
Don't really see it at work much. Looking forward
to hearing how his future goes with his movies."
I agree with her. thanks to Tim for his volunteering
during his tight schedule.

MEDIA TEAM NEWS
The recent Speaker event turned out to be quite successful,
and I am relieved. I hope all the participants learned
something new and very interesting. We would like to
organize more events like this in the future, so if you
have any ideas please feel free to let us know.
Well, this year is already halfway through. Let's work
harder to get things done! For those who are interested

WEB CONTENT TEAM NEWS

Two years ago this month, in our June 2005 newsletter, DEJ
published a feature article "“E-Learning: Anywhere, Anytime"”
by Lynn Fujino. Lynn researched Japan's e-learning
environment in order to write a thesis for her Masters in
Distance Education from Athabasca University, in Alberta,
Canada.
To follow-up on the story, recently Japan Today reported on
May 2, 2007 that about 40% of Japan'’s public and private
higher educational institutions, universities, and colleges
had introduced e-learning systems at the end of last year.
It would be very interesting to see the future direction of
this online educational system and how to build/create more
interactive, dynamic, and stimulating learning environment.
I found this event to be very interesting for those who are
interested in getting more up-to-date information about
e-learning, especially the recent progress in Japan. Please
see more details below:

EVENT REVIEW
The May Speaker's Event "Current trends in visual effects
and independent filmmaking" was held on May 19th in Aoyama.
I'm not a filmmaker myself, but I like to watch movies and
TV shows, so I was very excited to attend this event.
It was amazing to see the visual presentation using
QuickTime that demonstrated editing movie and visual effects
comparing "before editing" and "after editing". For example,
if something odd appears on the scene you can delete it.
Also you can alter the scene from day to night and vice
versa -- all on a computer! It might change my point of view
when watching movies.
Thank you very much for the great lecture, Mr. Tim Ralston!

INTERVIEW WITH A DEva
This month Ko Iwata interviewed Eri Hara, who often writes
to our mailing list.
1. If you are not from Tokyo, where are you from originally
and when and why did you relocate to Tokyo?
I was born in Sendai, Miyagi and moved to several places.
Now I live in Kawasaki.
2. How long have you been a member of DigitalEve Japan?
Probably for 5-6 years?
3. How did you find out about DigitalEve Japan and why did
you decide to join?
A friend of mine is a member and told me about this
interesting group for women, so I joined.
3. If you are a volunteer, please tell us of your activities
and why you decided to help DEJ.
I haven't volunteered yet, but would love to do so for the
wine party. I hope I can help in organizing a B.Y.O. party
where everyone brings their own favorite wine or food so
that we don't have to worry about portions.
4. Are there any activities and resources you would like to
see offered by DigitalEve Japan?
Hopefully there will be more reunions/get-together events. I
would appreciate that, since there are many newcomers that I
want to meet.
5. What are your interests in digital technology?
DVD and radio sites.
6. What kind of computer do you use?
eMac, Ver. 10.3.
7. Are you a member of any other technology-related groups
and if so, which ones?
No.
8. Please tell me a little bit about where you work and what
your responsibilities are.
I'm working as a temp assistant for a manager in a US-based
auditing company. I translate documents and letters that she
sends/receives, and also arrange stationary and file
documents. And sometimes I do translation work as a
freelancer in many fields, mostly technical.
9. Do you have any favorite software programs? If so, why?
/...../...../...../...../...../...../...../...../...../.....
Probably Powerpoint. It kills my eyes when I work on it for
a long time, but I love to use many colors and figures for
presentations.
10. What is your favorite computer-related activity? (for
example, games, email, surfing the net, etc.) Do you have
any other hobbies?
I love email, and surfing music- and cooking-related sites.
Also I love writing poetry.
11. What is your favorite website and why?
Some news sites to increase my knowledge and satisfy my
curiosity, and funny joke sites such as engrish.com. It is
also my routine to check my favorite band sites because I'm
planning to see their live show. Recently, I came to know
YouTube and thanks to my high-speed broadcasting service,
I'm enjoying it very much.
13) Name three things you will always find near your
computer.
A dictionary, a directory, and a radio
