NOTES FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE

ROTA LEADER'S REPOET

Dear DEvas,

Time quickly flies and one month has already passed.
Hope you all had a good start of the year.

This is the 70th issue of the DEJ Newsletter (six years!),
and it has come a long way under endless efforts by
all editors and members' support. After Jennifer leaves,
Ailsa will come back to the team to help the edition.
Thanks Ailsa for joining us again.

We had issues with the update of our home page in Japanese
and English because of the lack of volunteers. However,
our Tech Coordinator Smita worked hard on updating
the English file last month. You can find the reports
of 2007 DEJ Balance sheet and the 1st SC meeting minutes
on January 21st, 2008, now at:
http://www.digitalevejapan.org/news/2008/

As you can see, we are planning several events/workshops
every month. We need volunteers to share their time and
talents to help our members improve their skills.
The experience of volunteering will give you opportunities
to make new friends and business contacts. Please feel
free to ask us what you can do to help.

Looking forward to meeting you at a DEJ event.

MEDIA TEAM NEWS

R U....."KY"?
Have you heard this word, "KY" (pronounced as kei-wai)?
It's been publicly used for some time since last year.
It does not mean Kentucky. It is a recent Japanese slang
for some one who cannot "read the atmosphere": K for "Kuuki"
meaning "air," and Y for "Yomenai" meaning "cannot read."
In Japan, when you are in a meeting or a social gathering,
sensing the atmosphere and reacting accordingly and appropriately
is very important. If your reaction is out of place, they
call you "KY." I think it is universally important to perceive
the situation and respond correctly in any type of communication.
Perhaps there are more poor communicators in Japan today?

UPCOMING EVENTS

Farewell Party (luncheon) for Jennifer on Sat. Feb. 16th!!

After living in Japan (at the Yokota Base in Fussa) for about 4 years,
our good friend and designer, Jennifer Pack, is leaving Japan in late
February this year. Jennifer taught a couple of Photoshop workshops
and also volunteered as a newsletter editor for DEJ. During the last
4 years, she worked for many customers introduced through DEJ
and fully adjusted herself in Japanese culture. But the highlight
was the birth of her baby boy, Dylan, in 2006 in Japan!! Jennifer,
her husband Denny (a musician for the air force) and Dylan are
moving to Ohio next. So please join us in recognizing her contribution
to our group and sending her off at a luncheon party in Kichijoji
on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Specific time and venue will
be announced later.

If you can join us, please reply to media-j@digitalevejapan.org (C. Kawai)
by the 10th of February. We have to know the approximate number
of participants to reserve a venue.
