How to Yahoo!
How to Yahoo! (English)
Yahoo! Groups
We host our mailing list at Yahoo! Groups because it lets us do a heap of cool stuff like have a message archive, subscription management, chat and polling - and it's not so tricky to use! Getting a Yahoo ID is pretty straightforward and free (read more below)! The DE Japan group page is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/de-japan
Yahoo! Groups FAQ
1. Do I need a Yahoo ID to join the mailing list? No, you can still subscribe and manage your subscription without one. However if you don't, you can't lurk in the message archives, participate in the chats or other fun stuff! Over half of our members have Yahoo! IDs.
2. I already have a Yahoo ID, but it’s under another address. What should I do?
You can link your current Yahoo ID to your DigitalEve address. Instructions are in the How-to section.
3. Can I send messages to the list in Japanese?
Yes, go ahead! We are a bilingual group.
4. Why can’t I read messages in Japanese on the Yahoo Groups website?
Good question! Truth is we're not sure. It should work if your web
browser can read Japanese - but sometimes it doesn't. We suspect it has
something to do with either Japanese encoding or 7-bit vs. 8-bit mail
transport protocol. It seems to be a problem with Yahoo. And yeah we've
told them. Most of the time you can fix the problem yourself by selecting View->Character Set->Japanese (then try all the Japanese options) from your menu.
5. Does Yahoo Japan have Yahoo Groups, too?
Not yet. They said in the future they will have a Japanese version
though. We have our fingers crossed that this will change soon. To use DigitalEve Japan page at Yahoo! Groups you need a US-based
Yahoo! ID.
6. I went to the Yahoo Groups page, but I can’t read the archive or use the tools.
Have you logged in? If you see "Welcome Guest" in the upper left corner
then you're not. Just click "Sign in" to log in with your own existing Yahoo ID or register as a new user.

How to Use the Discussion Archive
On the DE-Japan Yahoo Groups page, you’ll see a summary of the five most recent messages. To read a message, click the Subject of the message. If you’d like to view all the messages for a month, click on the tally of messages sent in that month.
To view the full list of messages, click Messages in the navigation bar on left side. Summaries of the 30 most recent messages appear on your screen.
Organizing Messages
Message are listed by date with the oldest messages at the top of the page. To organize them by topic, click Thread.
If you’d rather see a scrollable list of the full messages, instead of a summary of them, click on Expand Messages.
Searching the Archive
Directly below the recent messages on the home page, or at the top of the Message page, is a Search Archive button. You can type in keywords, including names or e-mail addresses, to search the message archives.

Guidelines for Hosted Chats
(Thanks to Louise Haynes for sharing these rules with us)
- The main rule to follow is wait until you are called on.
- The host is the traffic director and calls on speakers in order (if possible), example: Go Kristen//
- The host knows you want to speak when you type ? or + and will keep a note of who is next to speak.
- Use the special characters listed below to help our chats flow smoothly.
Special Characters
- ? (question mark)
- If you want to ask a question, type a question mark.
- + (plus)
- If you want to add a comment to the discussion at hand, type a +
- … (3 dots)
- It is a good idea if you have a lot to say, to cut your comments into smaller bits and follow each bit with three dots ... That way, the others don't have to wait for you to type in all of your remarks and can follow along a little at a time.
- // (2 slashes)
- When you finish your turn, type // for the host to know you have finished.
- : (colon)
- If you want to add a side comment, type : before your comment. (This is useful for gestures, facial expressions, afk [away from keyboard], etc. For example, :smiles, waves will show up in pink.)
